Oh Isn’t Obama Sweet……..BUT WHEN??

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

“We should not be punishing patriotic Americans who have stepped forward to serve this country,” Obama said at the weekend. “We should be celebrating their willingness to show such courage and selflessness on behalf of their fellow citizens, especially when we’re fighting two wars.” US President Barak Obama

Ok so he is now once again on the no really I am going to help team, but WHEN that’s what I want to know the million dollar question is when??? When will you be doing this, it is nice to have the idea but we don’t need idea’s we need action! I don’t know about everyone else but politicians saying the right thing isn’t the challenge it’s in the follow through. I have gone on before about how insane I believe it is that these men and women can risk their lives in war but not live their lives once they get home, and I respect that change takes time. But President Obama said he would bring change and we are all waiting on this change, is he just another politician with good intentions and no good actions? Did we all make a mistake by being all for him in the election? maybe the GLBT community is too quick to trust people at their word? Time will tell…..

The Newleywed Game Gets Gay Contestants.

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Star couple ex-Star Trek star George Takei and his businessman partner Brad Altman will become the first-ever gay couple to appear in long-running TV gameshow The Newlywed Game when it returns soon.

The couple have been together for 22 years and married last year in California before the State’s laws were changed to block same-sex marriages.

“What we want is to display the normality and the joy of having a happy union,” Takei says.

To win the show, contestants must answer various fun questions about their partner, to prove how much they really know about their ‘newlywedded’ spouse.

Now That’s Some Pride!

A tiny Irish village is ‘going gay’ for a day in what may be the smallest gay pride event in the world.

The coastal hamlet of Easkey in County Sligo, which has just two shops, two pubs, two butchers, a post office and a population of 250, is urging heterosexual residents to “go gay” as an act of solidarity.

Organiser Denise Clarke, a 48-year-old lesbian interior designer and artist who has lived in Easkey for 10 years admits that when she first moved to Easkey “people were afraid of the new lesbian in town…. One woman even rang around the local farmers to warn them that their wives could be in danger… but an event like this today helps dispel those myths and brings the townfolk together.”

Village store manager Michael Gordon said: “Gay people are the same as every body else.” He has lived in Easkey all his life, helped rebuild two churches in the area and knows everyone in the town. “Ireland is a tolerant place now, thank God,” he said. “Rural Ireland has grown up.”

And so she should have! thats a terrible word to use! WOOT FOR THE LAW WORKING

————————————————–

A Polish woman has been fined 3,750 euros ($NZ8,000) for harassing a gay neighbor including repeatedly calling him a faggot in public places, in his apartment building and on the street.

Others in the small town took up her cry and rocks began to be thrown at the window of an apartment the gay man lives with his male partner. The woman also harassed the gay man by calling the police on made-up charges.

After five months’ legal action a judge ruled that using the word “faggot” is offensive and that its use violated the man’s right to dignity and privacy in this context.
A report by Poland’s Campaign Against Homophobia (KPH) has shown that the level of hate speech against LGBT people remains high in Poland. KPH is currently lobbying to have sexual orientation and gender expression included in the list of grounds which are protected against hate speech in the existing penal code.

Hate Crime

It’s sad but true many criminals in NZ who attack queer people walk away with a lesser or no charge due to the accusation that they provoaked the attack, now hopefully that will be a thing of the past. althought you have to remember NZ does not have equal rights for the GLBT community.

7.20PM: The gay opposition MP who did much of the drafting of a private members Bill aiming to delete the gay panic defence provision from the Crimes Act has cautiously welcomed the Government’s announcement that it will table its own Bill in Parliament later this week.

Rainbow Labour MP Charles Chauvel says he and his colleagues will study the text of the bill closely and if they find it satisfactory “we’ll be joyfully supporting it.” He says this afternoon’s announcement of the Bill, is “terrific.”

The Government has likely stolen the initiative from Labour with its own Bill, which could move through select committee stages more quickly than opposition MP Lianne Dalziel’s private member’s bill which came up in the ballot last week. As the Government controls the Order Paper which prioritises the progress of Bills in the House it is assumed it would give its own Bill a higher priority than one introduced by an opposition MP. Prime Minister John Key said late this afternoon that the Government is aiming to have the Bill passed through all its stages and enacted into legislation before the end of the year.

Israel’s Prime Minister has condemned yesterday’s massacre in which a masked gunman opened fire inside a gay and lesbian youth center in Tel Aviv, killing two people and wounding at least ten.

Hundreds of police officers have been scouring the streets of Tel Aviv in a door-to-door manhunt for the killer

“I want to condemn the shocking murder… I extend my condolences to the families of the victims and wish a full and quick recovery to the wounded,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. “Israel is a democratic and tolerant country, and we must respect every person as he is.”

The leader of Israel’s opposition concurred, saying “This grave incident should awaken society to rid itself of prejudice. We must accept and recognize the right of every person to live safely and with dignity.”

The mayor of Tel Aviv says his city will continue to provide a welcoming home for the gay and lesbian community, “and we will fight for every person’s right to live their lives as they see fit.”

Albania to Beat America In Human Rights Fight

One of the most conservative countries in Eastern Europe has taken a significant step towards embracing same sex marriage.

The Prime Minister of Albania, one of the last bastions of conservatism following the collapse of the Soviet Bloc, has announced that his party will introduce a Bill legalising same sex marriage. Acknowleding the Bill will be controversial, Sali Berisha says discrimination must become a thing of the past in modern Albania.

Albania is a predominantly Muslim country with no openly gay community to speak of. The Bill was drawn up by a group of non-governmental organisations and is likely to have a rough passage in the face of religious communities which have grown in strength since the overthrow of communism almost twenty years ago.

this is so sad

——————————————–

A Danish man is being charged with a hate crime for allegedly throwing fireworks at athletes during a gay sporting event in Copenhagen.

The man is accused of throwing fireworks in the Oesterbro stadium, where the the running competitions of the World Outgames are being held.

The only victim is a US athlete, who suffered a light head injury.

The alleged attacker was caught by athletes from the Sparta Athletes club when he tried to make a run for it. A court heard that the 31-year-old attacker had not intended to harm the athletes, as he had thrown only one firework against a wall.

This is the second such incident to occur in Copenhagen since the Outgames began.

The attacks follow on from Sunday, where three gay men from Sweden, Norway and the UK were admitted to hospital following an attack by several youths in the street.

Sunday’s attackers have also been charged with hate crimes.

Copenhagen’s openly gay deputy mayor Klaus Bondam has condemned the attacks, saying, “I am actually surprised that this has happened. I would have thought Copenhagen would have been more welcoming towards gays and lesbians from around the world,”

He told the BBC, “World Outgames have invited people from countries where you can receive the death penalty for being gay. These attacks shows the importance of organising a gay sporting event, to further people’s understanding of homosexuality

Around 5,500 participants have come from around the world to be in Copenhagen for an eight day sport and culture event, to promote rights for homosexuals globally.
