Sweet Shared Victory

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Lately my life has been consumed watching the Olympics and nothing makes you feel less accomplished than seeing people 8 years younger than you competing for medals while the world watches on. I mean when I was 16 just getting up before 5pm on a Saturday was impressive, I decided to start aiming low pretty early on you see in the great words of Homer…. Simpson “The lesson is ‘never try’” ahhhh such wisdom. Also nothing makes you feel more unhealthy, I am sure I’m not the only one sitting in my pj’s on the sofa munching on BBQ Doritos and spinach dip feeling exhausted just watching them skate around that track. For a split second I feel inspired to work out, then I think about what that actually means, hours sweating and panting looking like a big red sweaty tomato, suddenly that desire to run on a treadmill like I’m chasing after the last cupcake on earth just disappears.

The Olympics does have some good effects though, for example I now seem to think I’m Canadian which is amusing I find my self saying “OMG I hope we win”, we? when did I become Canadian and how do I feel I am contributing enough to any team to consider the success of athletes even partially mine. I mean I don’t watch the Grammys and hope “we” win best album even though I have listened to Lady GaGa’s album like it is some sort of religious ritual. I also love the freedom it gives me to pretend I get sports suddenly using every hockey term I have overhead and praying I used them at a reasonable time, the downside is when the person your watching it with does understand sports and replies…. luckily there is a phrase for just this moment “Totally…GO CANADA”, works every time or in case of emergency say anything anti-USA but not about 911 because then you hit a “too soon” moment.

To sum up: Eat Junk, Watch TV and Revel in the reflected glory of others :)

Following more complaints in the Mills‘ case, another man testing positive for HIV is the 5th to be diagnosed with the disease after allegedly coming into contact with the accused.

Mills has previously appeared in the Auckland District Court on 14 charges relating to 7 current complainants; 6 counts of intent to infect with HIV, one of attempt to infect, as well as 6 counts of grievous bodily harm and one of attempted grievous bodily harm.

GayNZ.com spoke with Bruce Kilmister of Body Positive in relation to the latest man diagnosed with HIV.

“When name suppression was lifted, we encouraged everyone to get tested. To date, 57 people have done so,” said Kilmister.

Mills is due to appear again on Wednesday in the Auckland District Court where further charges may be laid.

Kilmister urges any other people who believe that they may have been in contact with Mills to contact 0800 HIV LINE (0800 448 5463)

Fixing Blindness With A Tooth

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

Unconventional Medicine: British construction worker Martin Jones, 42, who lost one eye and was blinded in the other in a 1997 explosion, regained his sight this year as a result of surgery in which part of his tooth was implanted in the eye. Dr. Christopher Liu of the Sussex Eye Clinic used a piece of tooth because a “living” “anchor” was necessary to hold a patch of Jones’ skin underneath his eyelid, to generate blood supply while a new lens formed. When the lens was healthy enough, Dr. Liu made a hole in the cornea for light to pass, and Jones feasted his eye on his wife, whom he had married four years ago, sight unseen.

Alarming HIV Rates Among Gay Men In Africa

Monday, July 20th, 2009

I thought the article below might interest you, Remeber guys be smart get regualr check ups and play it safe. After all we only have 1 body and it’s the one we are in!
—————————————————————————–
HIV rates among gay men in many African countries are ten times higher than among the general population, reports The Lancet medical journal.

The article highlighted the need for more education and resources to encourage condom use around Africa, says the BBC.

Prejudice and harassment of gay people caused them to feel isolated, which in turn led to risky sexual practices, the study suggested.

Meanwhile, a study in Uganda has found that circumcision does not prevent transmission of HIV.

The research was ended abruptly to ensure women were not put at unnecessary risk of contracting HIV from circumcised men, who it was originally thought could not pass on the virus to their sexual partners.
